A message from Rebecca Green, Senior Ranger at Trumpington Meadows.
Hope you’re all enjoying the autumn weather. Last week the volunteer group spent a productive day helping rake some of the meadows from our late season cut. The areas around the pond are now looking spick and span, and the banks of the coprolite pits have been cleared to ensure these wildlife-rich verges stay in good condition. Thanks for such hard work on a surprisingly warm day.
This week on the 10th October we have a small amount of raking to continue with in the same area of the Coprolite ponds, but then we’ll be moving on to Badgers Wood where we’ll be removing some vegetation there. Both these areas are in the south of the reserve, so please meet by the bike rack just over the M11 at 10am. If you’re not sure where that is, or you’d prefer a lift, get to the office just before 10 and we’ll drive down in the Hilux (room for 4, so let us know if you’re coming). We’ll provide the tea, coffee and biscuits, make sure you bring your lunch!
Trumpington Meadows News
- The golden plover are back! These winter visitors can often be seen in huge flocks in the fields to the south. Anyone with a long lens fancy taking some photos? I managed to capture this video on my phone.
- We seem to have larger numbers of the ivy bee Colletes hederae on site this year. These solitary bees are new to the UK, first recorded in 2001 and are slowly making their way further north. They make nests in sandy, sunny banks and feed on late flowering plants such as ivy. If you see any, BWARS (the Bees, Wasps and Ants Recording Society) are looking for records for their mapping project.
- My colleague Iain works with a volunteer team on other sites around Cambridge, and for the next couple of weeks they are helping with some outstanding jobs at Trumpington Meadows. Last week they helped rake the field around the plane tree near the M11. They will be meeting on occasional Fridays – if you would like to join them please let me know.
Hopefully see you tomorrow!
