Trumpington Meadows volunteering: Wednesday 24 October

A message from Rebecca Green, Senior Ranger at Trumpington Meadows.

Last week the volunteer team helped tackle the large number of thistles in Badgers Wood in the south and made great progress – some good team work. This is a lovely, peaceful area of the reserve which will eventually be a small woodland but the thistles have really taken over, and so we are going to work hard to try and keep their number down. This will allow the trees and wildflowers to thrive.

This week we will start in the south of the reserve once more, and continue there for just a couple of hours. We will then move on to the area in the north by the “zigzag” and mosaic, where we’ll be cutting back the vegetation and removing the temporary fencing. Please meet at 10am by the bike stands in the south over the M11, or if you want a lift in the Hilux, please get to the office by 9.45am. Bring your lunch and plenty of water, we’ll provide the tea, biscuits, tools and gloves.

Trumpington Meadows news

  • There are still butterflies on the wing, with clouded yellows, commas and red admirals seen this afternoon, and a small copper seen enjoying the sun and the ivy yesterday (see attached photo from Paul Wyer).
  • Autumn bird visitors seen so far include redwing and stonechat. The golden plover have been elusive this week.
  • Congratulations to Iain and his volunteers for an excellent season with the Scudamores Bat Punt Safari – more than 1000 people came along this year!

Hopefully see you tomorrow!
