A message from Rebecca Green, Senior Ranger at Trumpington Meadows.
We had a good session tidying the yard and developing our wildlife garden last week, the hay rakes have been expertly restored and the front beds weeded – many thanks to all who came along to help.
Our next volunteer session will be on 21st November, 10am to 3pm (please note, not the 14th!). We will be in the south of the reserve once more, clearing vegetation from the species rich verges, tidying up the hedge along the bike path and taking a look at the work to be done with our hedgerows, along the banks of the coprolite pond, and the M11 bank. Please meet in the usual spot over the M11 bridge by the bike rack at 10am, or if you’d rather a lift, please come to the office for 9.45am. Bring a lunch, water and warm layers – we’ll bring tea, biscuits, tools and gloves.
Trumpington Meadows news
- Thanks to the great preparation work done by our volunteers we were able to have an enjoyable Wildlife Gardening event on Sunday 4th November. Attendees made and took home bat boxes, small pond kits, and communally helped build a hedgehog home. Hedgehogs are regular visitors to our yard, and we wanted to provide a safe space for them to hibernate. If you are interested in helping these mammals (and they need help, their numbers are declining), take a look at the Hedgehog Street website for advice. I also recommend watching this video by wildlife photographer (and occasional Trumpington Meadows volunteer!) Steph Foote about the fantastic work of the Shepreth Hedgehog Hospital.
- Our Autumn/Winter sightings board has finally been updated and is hanging back up outside the office. It is a work in progress so if you see any interesting wildlife you’d like recorded please let us know.
- The Wildlife Trust BCNs Training Workshop programme for 2019 has been launched. These short workshops cover a wide range of subjects for nature enthusiasts. If you are a regular volunteer with the Trust you can attend up to 5 of these a year for FREE. For more information please get in touch.
Looking forward to seeing you.
