A message from Rebecca Green, Senior Ranger at Trumpington Meadows.
HUGE thanks to the volunteers who came last week. We’d planned a really intensive day removing vegetation in Badgers Wood and along the verges in the south and the team worked really hard to get the job done.
Next week we’re meeting on Wednesday 5th December from 10am to 3pm – meet at the office. The plan is to finish weeding the beds around the office and then undertake a bit of small tree work – felling and coppicing some of the trees and shrubs along the driveway with hand tools. We’ll then head out on to the reserve in the north and depending on weather and other circumstances, we’ll either be clearing up the swale area or working in Old Mill Field to carry on removing some of the trees and scrub down there. I’m now on holiday for a week so if you have any questions or want to confirm if you’re coming, please email Jo (firstname.lastname@example.org) . As always, please bring lunch, warm outdoor clothes, and we’ll provide the tea and biscuits.
Trumpington Meadows news
Some exciting sightings at the reserve – Iain saw a bearded tit at the balancing pond on the 15th November. It’s unlikely that it was hanging around for very long, but who knows if they might be seen more regularly in the future! We also have a video clip of a raven spotted in the south – see attached and thanks to Paddy Grove for sending it in.
Lots of lovely winter flocks around, including golden plover, lapwings, redwings, linnets, starlings and goldfinches.
Are you interested in helping us out with our Turtle Dove project? Iain has been working with the RSPB/Operation Turtle Dove to help provide food and habitat for turtle doves – these beautiful birds breed in the UK over summer but are declining very fast and faced with extinction. We have prepared a patch of land in the south as a feeding station for them, and on Thursday 6th December we are having an information session. We will need help with feeding and monitoring over the next summer. If you think you can help or want to know more, get in touch with Iain on 07734 478462. We only have one or two spaces free on the 6th, so first come first served!
Thanks and see you soon,
Becky and Jo
